Abstract :
A new type of radar system is described in which a real-time online computer is used (a) to develop tracks from plots and (b) to control beam direction and transmitter modulation to refine this information progressively. The main object of the paper is to discuss the effect of complete automaticity on the transmissions required. It is concluded that adaptive variability is best obtained using a form of frequency modulation in which the usual disadvantages can be overcome.
