Abstract :
The operating principles and applications of charge coupled devices (c.c.d.s) are reviewed. Initially, simplified quantitative explanations are given of the physical operation, design and defects of c.c.d. structures. Their application to time-delay signal processing in the time and frequency domains is next considered. This is followed by consideration of c.c.d.s as image sensors for television or similar uses. Finally, their value as digital storage and signal-processing devices is described.
