Abstract
The paper presents a technique for studying the adequacy of a selected area in a power network in which the remaining network is modelled as an adequacy equivalent. This approach can be very useful for evaluation of large composite power systems as it is often necessary in practice to perform adequacy analysis of selected relatively small regions in the network. It is useful in conducting adequacy studies of interconnected areas where one area can be replaced by its equivalent, thus reducing the size of the overall system. The paper presents a new approach and shows that annual adequacy indices can be efficiently calculated using this technique, leading to greatly decreased computation times
