Abstract :
It is argued that because of the importance of energy in all activities, a comprehensive, long-range energy policy needs to be developed. The current debate surrounding energy production and consumption is examined, and energy forecasts, proposed energy policies, and effects on the environment are discussed. Factors to be taken into account in formulating an energy policy are identified. It is pointed out that it would not be desirable, even if possible, to formulate a detailed and prescriptive policy based on laws and regulations.<>
