Abstract :
Dispersion compensation placed at the end of a nonlinear system affects both signal variance and pulse distortion. This letter shows experimentally and theoretically that optimum performance for a wavelength-division-multiplexed test bed of 4870 km is achieved by selecting dispersion compensation to minimize pulse distortion rather than signal variance.
