Abstract :
The ATLAS detector at CERN´s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be exposed to proton-proton collisions at a rate of 40 MHz. A three-level trigger system has been designed to select potentially interesting events and reduce the incoming rate to about 200 Hz of storage rate. The first trigger level is implemented in custom-built electronics; the second and third levels are realized in software. In this paper, the trigger system, its design parameters, and results from the LHC run in 2008 are described.
