Profile and area echograph for surveying and location of obstacles in waterways

The survey ships carry outriggers floating athwartships which are fitted with sets of ultrasonic transducers (up to 50 receivers). In the area echographs, the transducers are switched to avoid picking up spurious echoes. The record is made on a wide paper chart.
