Abstract
A novel transmission-line monitoring method for estimating the transient voltage from the transient current alone is presented. This is based on the properties of traveling waves instigated on high-voltage transmission lines as a result of a fault, switching operation, or a lightning strike. The method is unique in that superimposed voltage transients can be deduced without employing measurements taken from voltage transducers. It is demonstrated that full advantage can be made of the broad bandwidth of the current transducers to improve fault location and enable high-speed traveling wave protection to be applied on power systems
