This year will be a critical one for the next generation of intelligent transportation systems in the US. In August, a major federal government backed trial of connected vehicle technology begins in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Its results will inform a decision on what role Washington will play, if any, in seeding infrastructure and other future ITS investments by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NhTsa), due in 2013.
