Abstract
The current status of the local loop in the UK today and how it is likely to grow in the future are described. British Telecom´s operating environment is examined to provide an understanding of the starting point for the local loop strategy. After a brief review of the existing copper network, technological developments in copper, fiber, and radio systems that will shape the future local loop are explored. A flexible rollout strategy involving a mixture of copper, fiber, and radio technologies is proposed.<>
