Abstract
The National Research Council´s Committee on the Bibliography of Mathematical Tables and Other Aids to Computation (MTAC) was the first professional organization in the US. It held the first public conference on computers in 1945 and published the first journal of record for computing. It was chaired by R.C. Archibald, who held strong views about the nature of professional organizations, views that often conflicted with the visions of others
