Abstract :
A series of Fe/Au multilayers have been sputter deposited and their magnetic and Mossbauer properties studied. The magnetization shows a clear tendency to increase for Fe layers t(Fe) thinner than 12 Å. For these samples the magnetic moment of Fe at 5 K is calculated to be 2.64 μB which is about 20% higher than that of bulk Fe. The surface anisotropy at 295 K is found to be +0.38 erg.cm-2 . Due to large demagnetization effect all samples show in-plane magnetization. The hyperfine field (32.6-32.8 T) for all the samples studied is close to that of bulk Fe. For samples with t(Fe) ⩽15 Å, the line width and the isomer shift increase showing the presence of at least two types of Fe sites, one in the bulk of the layer and the other near the interface
