The 28 papers in this special issue on electrical discharges in vacuum are improved and extended versions of papers given at the 24th International Symposium on Discharges and Electrical Insulation in Vacuum (ISDEIV), held in Braunschweig, Germany, on August 30-September 3, 2010.
