Abstract :
I read with interest that further research is to be carried out concerning the lack of females in science and engineering (News, Vol 5 #7). Surely the reason for this has been clear for the past several decades. First, the culture in the UK has developed so that parents do not see science and engineering as `suitable?? careers for girls and, secondly, our schools reinforce this, as science and engineering is predominantly taught in primary and secondary schools by teachers without a science or engineering background.
