On the evening of April 24, 1980, the United Slates launched a dramatic military operation to rescue the 50 American hostages held in Teheran. In the early hours of the following morning the rescue mission was aborted because of the mechanical failure of three out of eight helicopters assigned to the mission. eight American servicemen died during the withdrawal operation.
