Not since the Manhattan Project atomic bomb effort of World War II had there been such a massive mobilization of technical talent in the United States as that started in the late 1950s to conquer space. Backstage it was replete with the rivalry of competitive technological approaches to objectives that initially were defined in only the broadest of terms.
