  • Abstract
Many years ago, the national and state parks and forests in the United States fiercely fought every fi re that started in their areas. As a result, the amount of dead wood and trees accumulated to make a collection of very large tin derboxes. The effort to suppress all fi res as soon as possible resulted in fewer fi res, but those that were not contained grew very large, fueled by all the dead trees that would normally be consumed naturally by periodic small fi res. The National Park Service and National Forest Service realized their mistake and started letting fi res started by nature burn naturally, and only interfered when human life and property were in danger. This new rule guided the National Park Service in the 1980s.
