Abstract :
The author provides an overview of GPS (Global Positioning System) from the perspective of a magazine editor, emphasizing marketplace applications of the technology, as well as some issues in the news and a brief view of the future. It is noted that, during the last two to three years, government and industry experts have consistently underestimated the GPS market. With falling prices for receiver equipment and greater understanding of the capabilities of GPS, market forecasts now are showing steady upward trends. GPS is becoming a bull market. No longer just a technological success, seen primarily as reserved for military use, GPS is now a full-bore global business driven by commercial concerns. The author points out that civil opportunities abound and that there are almost limitless applications
