Abstract :
This paper introduces a radar system design and signal processing for detection of groundwater in a desert environment. The proposed radar design is based on the concept of stepped frequency. It can be implemented by four interleaved ADC´s. The proposed system has the capability to deal with the difficulty of detecting a weak signal being reflected from a deep interface in the presence of noise and interference. The prospect of electronic components being non-ideal is addressed. The radar´s capability to process the received signal to combat the degrading effects of the environment on the radar signal is demonstrated. It performs coherent integration to improve the signal to noise ratio and nonuniform sampling to avoid interference. It combats the lowpass filtering by the ground by applying a frequency dependent gain to equalise for the excessive lost energy at higher frequencies (deconvolution).
