Title :
Designing an alarm transport subsystem for the ONU loop power hubs
Author_Institution :

Abstract :
The technical and economic issues to be considered in the design of the power alarm subsystem are considered. Typical failure modes in a loop power hub installed in the outside plant are listed with discussions on the criticality of each to the network. Various methods of transporting the alarm information from the power hub to the optical network unit (ONU) are discussed, with detailed analyses on the technical merits and demerits and the cost impact of each method. DC schemes using DC voltages or currents as well as AC schemes using data channels or audio tones are discussed. Certain ideas are presented as to how to customize the power alarm subsystem design to the particular needs of a network provider
