Abstract :
A computational model of a wideband μ-coaxial based modified 4×4 Butler matrix feed network for a four-arm spiral antenna is discussed in this paper. Each component within the Butler matrix is fully characterized using the finite element method and their performance is compared with the commercially available counterparts. A method of moments model of a four-arm spiral antenna for 18-40 GHz is also developed and used to determine the effects of the Butler matrix feed on the antenna pattern purity. The designed Butler matrix is 22 × 20 × 1 mm (L × W × H) in size and operates over the entire 18-40 GHz range.
