Abstract
In this presentation, a new technique, based on parasitic lasing, is introduced that allow a digital output response to be obtained in any interferometric switching device that uses a lasing medium for the nonlinear element. In this instance, the nonlinear response is created by optically pumping an ytterbium-doped fiber, and the digital response is achieved by enclosing the fiber in a lossy lasing cavity, allowing it to lase weakly, thus clamping the induced-index change
