Abstract :
Summary form only given. Calabazas Creek Research, Inc. is completing the development of a 1 MW CW waterload for Gaussian mode gyrotrons with funding from the Department of Energy´s Small Business Innovation Research program. One MW CW gyrotrons for electron cyclotron heating of fusion plasmas are currently in development at a number of locations. The current generation of gyrotron waterloads is incapable of dissipating this much power in a portable device capable of calorimetrically measuring incident power. The waterload is designed for gyrotrons operating between 100 GHz and 170 GHz, though operation outside this frequency range is possible under certain conditions. The device incorporates a Mirror Box that conditions the RF beam emerging from the gyrotron for transmission into the main load section. This allows optimization of a single waterload system for various gyrotrons operating with different output configurations. The Mirror Box also corrects for asymmetrical RF beams and beams not emerging from the tube perpendicular to the output window. The Mirror Box is also capable of dissipating significant amounts of RF power that could be emerging from the gyrotron in spurious directions.
