Abstract
This paper describes the European FP6 IST project, called MAGNET, whose goal is to enable commercially viable personal networks (PN) that are affordable, user-friendly and beneficial to all kinds of users in all aspects of their everyday life. While the project adopts a system approach to personal area network (PAN), it does not treat PANs in isolation. The project builds upon significant advances in peer-to-peer networking, interworking between different networking technologies, wireless technology for PNs, and network and service security. It is also based on techno and socio-economic analysis of the future user requirements and business opportunities. Through MAGNET´s success, Europe will be able to leverage its wireless leadership towards new business opportunities
