Abstract :
The use of the time scale transform to characterize water surface wave elevation records is presented. Wavelet-based techniques provide a way to obtain the local scale energy distribution. This variance analysis can be extended to measure local asymmetries, amplitude, and temporal skewness, by means of wavelet coefficients cubic averages. To further analyze intermittent coupling between components along the data record, a local biscale function is defined to represent the fraction of power at the sum of two scales in terms of the local quadratic interaction between two wavelet coefficients
