Abstract :
Summary form only given. Wind energy provides many benefits such as a low energy costs and near zero carbon footprint, but it also brings new challenges, a consequence of wind´s intermittent nature. These challenges must be overcome by ISO/RTOs and other entities responsible for the reliable and efficient operation of the power grid. The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) has taken a number of steps to facilitate the integration of up to 8000 MW of wind resources into a 34,000 MW peak load system. These include a centralized wind forecasting system, putting wind plants on dispatch, creating a market for limited energy storage resources as well as creating a market mechanism to utilize the hydro resources of Hydro Quebec to balance the intermittency of wind.
