Abstract
Extensive use of traveller information systems is proposed in the SCOPE Cities of Southampton, Cologne and Piraeus in order to keep people informed of travel conditions and options and encourage a modal shift from private cars to public transport. The SCOPE concept for integrated urban traffic management combines four main application areas: strategic (or geographic) information systems; dynamic urban traffic control; public transport management; and travel and traffic information. The geographic information systems provide the tools needed for planning and analysis, and a framework in which the other applications can be integrated within a strategy that combines real time and forecast knowledge of the situation on the road and public transport networks. The overall SCOPE concept is illustrated, which shows the components of the Traffic and Traveller, Information Centre (TTIC) being implemented in the ROMANSE project in Southampton
