Abstract :
The author has reviewed some of the near bandedge optical nonlinearities which can be used as the basis of all-optical switching devices. An experiment to observe self phase modulation in a semiconductor waveguide and the improvement in response time obtained by the application of a reverse bias were briefly described. The use of two-photon absorption as the basis of nonlinear absorption modulators was also discussed
