Abstract :
The author describes the efforts of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to provide a new way for designers to view the next generation of LWR (light-water reactor) plants. Specifically, he describes the ALWR (advanced LWR) requirements program with particular emphasis on man-machine interface systems (M-MIS) requirements. Requirements are written for the 100 MWe ALWR evolutionary plant. Conceptual designs are being developed for a 600 MWe plant with greatly simplified passive safety systems. M-MIS requirements are being created for the next-generation ALWR plant by utilizing modern technology and techniques, a comprehensive systems approach, and considering the operator as an integral part of the system design.<>
