Abstract
An algorithm for enhancing digital chest images that allows significant data compression while improving the diagnostic quality of the image is discussed. The algorithm is based on the analog technique of unsharp masking. Compression ratios of 1.6:1 are achieved. The images are evaluated for the task of tumor detection. Preliminary results indicate that the enhancement improved diagnostic quality, which was not degraded by the compression and restoral process. In a clinical situation the images can therefore be stored reversibly, giving an ultimate compression ratio of 4.8:1
