Abstract
The requirements and constraints for a wireless local loop (WLL) system are presented in contrast to those of a mobile system. It is shown that an optimised WLL system, in terms of the cost-performance trade-off, will be significantly different from its mobile counterpart. The Ionica fixed radio access (FRA) system represents a new generation of purpose designed systems and is described in some detail. The relationships between the key technical parameters (such as range and capacity) and cost metrics are identified and investigated. One of the important differences between an optimised WLL system and a mobile system is the nature of the radio propagation channel. New measurements and analysis made by Nortel in this area are also presented
