Abstract :
A proposal for the study, specification, and implementation of an ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) operating system that conforms to a client-server model is presented. The kernel of the operating system, consists of the signaling protocol and layer management functions, and a number of servers are used to provide the network control and management tasks such as resource management and fault management. The operating system also includes a user command interface that provides a simple high-level abstraction for users´ applications. The desired features of such a system are discussed. The key modules are identified, the preliminary requirements for each module are given, and the critical issues that remain to be resolved are highlighted
