  • Abstract
Since access networks are deployed to support peak traffic, part of base stations always keep active during off-peak period, resulting energy dissipation. In this paper, we propose a dynamic Base Station (BS) sleeping algorithm to reduce energy consumption, which exploits dynamic characteristics of mobile data traffic on time and spatial dimensions. Our novel approach aims to improve energy efficiency in wireless access network by optimizing the power utilization, and keep Quality-of-Service (QoS) guaranteed by taking advantage of the nonuniform spatial distribution of User Equipments (UEs). Simulations using ideal traffic profiles are evaluated to quantify the potential savings from dynamic BS sleeping in a realistic setting and prove the feasibility of slight effects on network performance.
