Abstract :
Power system operators monitor high voltage systems, both at distribution and transmission level, to perform `health-checks´ on the apparatus. A direct connection to a high voltage line requires a large amount of insulation and, although accurate measurements of the voltage may be made, the cost prevents installation at all but the most critical locations. Monitoring the electric field at a distance from the conductors allows information on the conductor voltages to be derived. Preliminary results suggest that a 2D model behaves in the same manner as a test system and that results from the model can be used to interpret measurements of the remote field
