Abstract :
This work presents a new variant of a discone ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna operating in the frequency range between 3.1GHz and 4.1GHz. The antenna is fitted with two cylinders: a first cylinder placed in the middle of the conventional cone to effectively select the high cut-off frequency and a second cylinder is attached to the conventional antenna disc to effectively select the low cut-off frequency. The antenna with operating frequency close to lower band of UWB is suitable for radiation into the human body since the penetration of signal is reduced by effect of tissue properties as frequency increases. The small dimensions of the antenna and its operating frequency makes it a very strong candidate for Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) applications such as vital sign monitoring (heart beat and respiratory rate detection), brain scan, breast scan and implants detection.
