  • Abstract
The global economy and modern life increasingly depends on electricity. In spite of the increasing demand and production, the electrical power grid has not changed a lot in last decennia. However, the advent and integration of renewable energy sources for electricity generation is having a drastic impact on the electrical power system. The photovoltaic (PV) technology contributes to a large extent to this change. In many countries PV systems generate electricity directly from sunlight at a cost that is lower than the price of retail electricity. PV technology has become a viable option for large-scale low-cost electricity generation. Due to the intermittent supply of solar electricity by PV, the load management, demand response, and storage techniques together with intelligent power management are developed to facilitate matching of the electricity supply and demand. The electrical power system is becoming complex and requires multi-disciplinary approach for successful system integration of all components. The future power system has to deliver what the global society dreams about today: reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity for everyone.
