Abstract
The authors report on a computed tomography (CT) scan which was used to measure and demonstrate cerebral oxygen metabolism indices such as oxygen concentration of brain tissue (OCBT), cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO2), and oxygen extraction fraction (OEF), simultaneously with cerebral blood flow (CBF), in animal brains. The animals were immobilized and inhaled xenon gas mixed with oxygen or a mixture of xenon, helium and oxygen, and diffusion constants were obtained. OCBT was calculated from the ratio between two diffusion constants. CMRO2, OEF and CBF were simultaneously calculated and demonstrated by reconstructing the CT scan brain image with these data at each pixel
