Abstract :
One of the oldest city where life goes fast, the megacity of Istanbul. It keeps growing continuously, its populations is about 14 million and under goes renovation. Construction industry is growing fast. But how about the old, second city under Istanbul? How much did it damage? Where are it borders? What are it secrets? The researches we conduct show that there are many buildings buried under contemporary Istanbul. It´s not a secret either. We track that second Istanbul´s clues by GPR traces. We have more than 2000 profiles GPR data in different measurements areas at Istanbul. At that moment our data archive include: 29 different parcels at Historical Peninsula (old Constantinople), all streets of Grand Bazaar, Aksaray square with all its streets, Yenikapi / Yali district (about 15000m2). It is not easy to find ideal places for data collection. Sometimes we need to go to the end level of the wreckages. We determine historical building clues, cisterns, old walls, wells, tunnels, road remains and lots of forgotten and unknown things. All of our data analyze and processing are performed carefully and provide results in 2D and 3D images. On the other hand, we determine proper drill points for the necessary drills for the new buildings. Our purpose is to not damage the historical ruins. Our study is in continuous progress with new researches every month. Most of the time, we look for differences between old and new and traces of history by GPR traces.
