Abstract
A new multiple access protocol is presented and evaluated. Called the Adaptive Multiple Access Protocol for Integrated Services (AMAPIS), it features excellent efficiency under several values of input load. The protocol uses a mechanism for the observation of the network conditions. This mechanism allows the network stations to select the appropriate access method in order to optimize their performance. The rules governing the network operations like observation access selection and channel access are implemented by fully distributed algorithms
