Abstract :
In single frequency networks (SFN) all transmitter make use of the same frequency broadcasting the same data simultaneously within the whole coverage area. Compared to a multi-frequency network (MFN) approach, SFNs offer advantages in terms of coverage and required radio spectrum. However, due to the transmission of equal data, local services are not possible anymore. Using the time slicing technology of digital video broadcasting - handheld (DVB-H), local service distribution can be applied also for SFNs. This approach enables the transmission of global services comprising all SFN advantages, and local service areas (LSAs) with different content by using only one frequency layer. The sizes of the LSAs are limited due to interference and are dependent on the power of the interfering transmitter. This paper deals with the adaption of the transmitting power in order to optimize the sizes of the LSAs. An heuristic optimization approach using simulated annealing (SA) has been proposed. Furthermore, impact of additional frequency layers on LSA and global service area (GSA) coverage will be analyzed. The simulation and the achieved results are based on a realistic scenario.
