Abstract :
Many countries around the world had experienced large-scale blackout incidents in recent years. Preventing the large-scale blackout or reducing its impact requires an effective monitoring of the system state of the entire grid during emergency operations. Visualizations that provide a wide-scale and animating display to graphically show important system quantities are an effective way to assist the operators in assessing system status during emergency operations. The availability of real-time system operating data is the main problem when visualizing the emergency operations. To provide the adequate "real-time" system operating information for monitoring system operations, a new procedure for monitoring large-scale power system operations is proposed in this paper. Instead of using the system state solution obtained from state estimation (SE), synchronized phasor measurements are used in this paper for monitoring the entire grid operations. Since the phasor measurements only exist at a few buses, a linear SE is used to obtain more phasor data. The voltages of the estimated phasor data are then visualized using contours. The proposed method is tested on an actual disturbance event occurred in Taiwan power system. Performance of the proposed method is ensured through several sensitivity analyses.
