Abstract :
The Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) system, also known as the WSR-88D, has proven to be a valuable tool to detect and monitor weather systems and to provide data to researchers looking to explore weather phenomena and to improve forecasting techniques. Under the NEXRAD Product Improvement (NPI) Program, these weather products and the raw weather data will be made available to a greater number of users through the application of modern technology and commercial products. This paper discusses the philosophy behind the development of the NPI communications infrastructure and the current progress to provide the desired capabilities
