Abstract :
This paper presents a newly conceived structure of the two-layer stacked electromagnetically coupled (EMC) circular patch antenna radiating element. The structure has been constructed with an integral independent ground plane and optimised for all its parameters, resulting in a large impedance bandwidth of more than 15% in L-band, offering good pattern characteristics, low crosspolarisation levels and a high gain. The radiating element has been tested successfully for its performance in a 16-element (4/spl times/4) planar active array, by synthesising low sidelobe patterns over large array scan angles.
