Abstract
3GPP TDD has previously been thought of as a picocellular technology designed to complement FDD by providing capacity enhancement in dense urban deployments. However, there are no fundamental reasons why TDD is limited to picocellular coverage. This paper shows that the two reasons often cited for constraining TDD to this role; link budget limitations and co-existence issues, are invalid. Indeed, the link budget of TDD can match that of FDD or GSM1800 and the co-existence of TDD and FDD in this macrocellular deployment can be easily managed. Furthermore, it is shown that TDD has several unique qualities that make it ideal for the delivery of data services that complement the services offered over FDD. This application of TDD makes macrocellular deployment desirable. This approach expands the service set offered by 3G operators maximising the opportunities for early return on investment.
