Abstract
Freight trains´ performance can be greatly improved by designing carrying, propulsion loading, unloading, operating and maintenance systems interdependently without regard to existing requirements for interchangeable cars. Examples are shown as applied to a novel piggyback carrier called the Iron Highway, and novel traction control and AC propulsion systems of interest to electrical engineers are discussed.
