Abstract
A coherent arithmetic system with addition, subtraction, and multiplication is described. Truncation and cancellation phenomena show the limits of the floating-point number systems when computing large expressions. The authors present a software oriented arithmetic inherited from online arithmetic that handles numbers serially using a high radix redundant notation. The algorithms make it possible, on a parallel computer, to compute numerical expressions quickly, in a digit-level pipelined fashion, and offer an inner control of the precision
