Abstract
This paper discusses the use of CAD for design analysis to substantiate the design of new products during the NPD process. Based on our experience with a wide range of companies, as well as a survey about the use of CAD in companies in Singapore, it is concluded that the designers of mass or batch produced products tend to under-utilize CAD for design analysis. This is in contrast to the designers of capital plant who tend to utilize it to its full potential. Reasons for this under-utilization are suggested. Some of the useful actions that can be taken by companies, academia and other institutions to encourage a better utilisation are also outlined
