Abstract :
This paper discusses the role of IP, and in particular IPv6, in third generation mobile networks. 3G networks have a number of complex requirements. This type of network will be expected to handle a mix of traditionally circuit switched and packet data. Some of this will be in real time, whilst “best effort” will suffice for other traffic. Reviewing the current status of IP in 3G networks and looking forward to the so called “all IP” network, the paper looks at exactly what is required from IP and discusses whether these requirements are met by IPv6
