Abstract
Most windows based systems leave the task of windows layout management to the user. This inadvertently tends to decrease the productivity of the user. This paper presents a genetic algorithm (GA) based approach to windows layout optimisation. A new shadow-based algorithm is proposed to remove the overlap from the windows and to compact the layout of the windows. The usefulness of this approach is illustrated in this paper with the samples of the generated layouts, the characteristic charts and possible enhancements in the future
