Abstract
This paper presents an overview of the evolution of mobile communications towards third generation and beyond. Advanced multimedia services are discussed in view of the trend towards packet-oriented traffic in a wireless environment and in view of the dominant trends in mobile communications. We show how the trends and requirements are affecting the vision of future systems beyond the third generation and their impact on current developments
